HR Hammock Rassy

Postby Martijn » Tue Dec 10, 2013 10:42 am

Last spring when I was at home going through old stuff I could use on my boat I found a hammock. Normally this Hammock belongs to a wooden frame which sits in my garden but wasn't used for quite some time, I’d rather be on my boat instead of the garden. Now the idea came it would better serve it’s purpose on my boat for lazy afternoon relaxation.

This is how to fit it; First wrap a strap around the furled jib about 30 cm below the clew. Then connect the strap and the clew with an inox wire as showed in the picture. Carabiners are fit on both ends of the Hammock. Lock one side to the spinnaker pole ring on the mast and the other onto the inox wire. Then lock the main sail halyard onto the hammock carabiner at the inox wire. Now tackle it up just below the clew and secure the halyard. This construction ensures that the strain is equally spread over the fore stay. Next go to the fridge, fetsh a beer, lay yourself into the Hammock and enjoy the sunset ;)

BTW; when motoring please watch out for high wakes from fast boats, the pitching of the bow launches you straight to the moon

Hmmm... a hammock, remote anchorage, warm summer evening, light breeze to keep the mosquitos away, maybe a glass of Heineken...that does not sound bad at all!!

Thanks for sharing the photo of the construction. I have not thought about it before, but I guess that a gennaker 'tack strap' which can be placed around the forestay could also be used with hammock. That would be a good dual purpose for the strap if one happens to have one for the gennaker...
