Bottom hull paint with copper

Postby Helmut » Sun Mar 12, 2017 5:35 pm

After I have successfully painted the bottom hull with Internatinal VC Offshore,
I was reading in my old Owners Manual of the Volvo Penta 2002 :
" Boats with S-Drive : Bottom and drive paint must not contain copper"

Does anybody have an idea what this is about ?

Thanks

Helmut

Hi Helmut

Personally I would not worry too much about the the cobber based anti fouling. Normally cobber based paints are considered harmfull to any aluminium part on the boat - such as the saildrive, and therefor we are advised to use anti foulings with out cobber, such as Alu Protect from Hempel. I guess the owners manuel, by mistake, includes the hull. To my knowledge cobber based paints are very effectfull and by no mean harmfull to the hull. If your saildrive has got sufficient layers of protective primer it should protect it from any cobber bases paint on the hull. I have got friends in the sailing club that always use the same cobber baser paint on both hull and saildrive- with no problems at all.

Kind Regards,
John

Thank you John for your reply.

I see it the same way. I didn`t use it for the saildrive anyway.

Thanks Helmut

Hi Helmut
My 29, which I acquired this year, was treated with CopperCoat about 10 years ago by previous owner and recent survey when I bought her indicated hull in good condition with no osmosis.

When she is lifted out of the water soon I’m hoping, after cleaning, just to have to touch the hull up with a bit of CopperCoat pant where required.
It’s expensive stuff but has clearly worked on my 1990 HR29, #500, Wild Theme.
