HR29 Malou nr 488

Postby Remie Remmelts » Tue Jun 13, 2017 6:57 pm

Hi members of HR Owners Forum.

I like to introduce "Malou" ( we keep the name for time being) which I boughta few weeks ago at West Coast of Sweden. It's Hullnumber 488 build 1990.

We sailed her last week via Denmark, Kiel and Cuxhaven to Monnickedam in the Netherlands. We experienced all kinds of weather conditions, seastate and we like to conclude that its a seaworthy yacht with a good engine
(no news ).

The mainsail en genua are both furling, easy to handel in the cockpit so no need to go on deck in wind conditions.

We noticed some water in the after bun / locker under the tiller. Is there any member that has similar experience and what could be the cause.

look forward to hear.
Remie

Hi Remie,

Welcome on the forum and congratulations on your new boat!

Regarding the question about the water in the tiller locker, could you post this question on the Maintenance and Refit -section, where the question can be more easily found by other members? Thanks!

Hi Remie,

I now get back to your question about the tiller stuffing box. If the stuffing box hasn't been maintained for a while, it may start to leak. The box requires some water vaseline/grease to get squeezed in the box from time to time. I have added vaseline about 1-2 times per season and it has keeped it watertight. However, I guess that the gland packing inside the box does not last forever, so it might need changing at some point. Check out this old topic about the Stuffing box: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=186

Hi Antti,
Its seems that the problem (leakage at after locker caused by the shaft gland) has been solved.
We had to move the rudder and the shaft at the warf which was a lot of work.
We found out that packing inside the gland was in a terrible condition and had to be replaced.
Its a similar story as reported by Chris.

Attached a picture of the new glandpacking.
