It can be worse

Hey All,
Few hours ago, in the harbour of Symi,(Greek Islands), a "wise guy" was speeding in the harbour and as a result of the waves he was creating, my top mast was damaged after banged the yacht next to me.
Attached photos.
I wasn't on board but my "neighbors" gave me all the details so I went to the port police and filed a complaint, I also informed the insurance company(Pantaenius).
I was told to go tomorrow morning again to the port police to see what can be done...
The only lesson I have for myself and for you guys, is maybe to avoid, or at least minimize the time spent in crowded harbours and prefer staying more time in safe anchorage.
In retrospect, there not much that I could have done differently, before leaving the yacht I cleared it from the jetty by pulling the anchor chain a bit. There were no other yachts next to me when I left.
As much as it is annoying and frustrating, I try not to forget that problems that can be solved with money can't really be classified as problems and I should be happy that I'm healthy and have the privilege to enjoy a long summer vacation sailing my HR 29.
Tomorrow in daylight I will climb the mast and could better assess the damages.

Hi Elad, sorry to hear that.
Just an idea, if your (or someone else's) insurance company is going to pay for the damages, it might be a good idea to try to get them to unstep your mast for the repairs so you can also fix that off centered mast step at the same time?

Hey All,
It was a while since I posted the original post but here are few updated...
After climbing the mast it seems that the overall damage is lower than my deductible so I decided not to do any claim.
The most expensive damage is the Raymarine wind vane... apart of that I had damage to the VHF cable and the stand that supports it.
For now, I use my other VHF antenna and don't use the wind vane...I'll probably try to "fix" the stand of the antenna when I'll be back in Israel.
I'm still in the Greek Islands and might sail to Turkey soon in order to find a place to do a new teak deck, I took some quotes in the past and it seems that the market price is around 600euro per SQM (12MM) including labour....

I guess that when one takes into account the deductible and lost bonuses, it becomes quite expensive to have the insurance company to pay the claim.
Still I don't quite understand why the 'wise guy', who was speeding into the harbour, won't have to pay for the damages he is clearly responsible?

well... regarding your question, I guess I could have chosen the option of litigation in court but with all due respect to the Greek justice system I see not much prospect in that case.
When I tried to speak with the owner of the boat that caused the damage he was very aggressive and rude, unfortunately, the port police doesn't "bother" to conduct any investigation if there is only property damage and they only intervene in case of corporal damage.
The local "mooring man" told me that it's a common phenomenon, having the charter boats rushing in port and causing waves and I'm not the first and probably not the last to damage his yacht....
I guess that in this case I would just have to swallow the bitter pill.
