Gennaker Hoisting

Postby Elad » Wed Aug 05, 2015 11:19 am

Hey everybody,

Does anyone hoist a Gennaker on his HR. I have on board what seems to be the original Gennaker that came with the boat but it seems that the halyard we have for the Spinnaker is too low for the Gennaker and it's difficult to furl it properly.

Best regards,

Elad

Hi Elad,
I use the gennaker quite often and find it practical and easy-to-set downwind sail. To my knowledge gennaker and spinnaker use the same halyard, which in Dolphin Dance is located right above the attachment point of the fore stay on the mast (see photo) and I can't really see any other possible location for the spinnaker halyard. Where is your spinnaker halyard located? One possibility is that your gennaker is intended to be used as a mast top gennaker, but I don't think that this would be a standard solution for a 7/8-fractional rig. I know one HR29 that uses a mast top downwind sail, but in that boat the upper part of the rig is supported with additional spreaders.

Hey,

My Spinnaker halyard is located at the same location.

The problem I encountered was that it wasn't very easy to furl the Gennaker properly(It has a furler system), on top of that, the foot of the sail was touching( a little bit) the pulpit.

Do you have an extension pole? I can vaguely remember you posted somewhere you attach it to the anchor or pulpit?!

Best regards,

Elad

Hi,

Ok, now I understand better. Where is your gennaker furler currently attached to? I guess that in order to work properly, one should have fairly long bowsprit for the gennaker so that the furler is clear of the pulpit.

Our gennaker furler is attached to the anchor and the furler is also sometimes touching the pulpit so it is not an ideal solution, but I can live with that.
